What Project NEXUS does

Project NEXUS is an enterprise-grade, multi-tenant community platform. Every module below ships in v2.0.0 today. We label modules honestly: unmarked items are Generally Available; newer or actively-hardening surfaces carry a Beta or Preview chip; and a Built, not enabled chip means the work is finished and switched off, waiting for demand.

Your community may not have all of these switched on

This page shows everything the Project NEXUS software can do. It is not a list of what is turned on for your own community.

Every community chooses which parts it wants to use, so some of the things listed below will not appear in your menus. That is normal and it is not a fault — it simply means your community has not switched that part on.

What you can actually use is whatever you can see in your own menus. If something here looks useful and you cannot find it, ask whoever runs your community to turn it on.

How we label maturity

• GA: Generally Available - stable, supported, used in production across pilot tenants.
• Beta: Working in production today, but the public surface or wire protocol is still being hardened.
• Preview: Recently shipped and available to opt in. Expect rapid iteration - the API and UX may change.
• Built, not enabled: Built, tested and switched off by default. The work is done and audited, but nothing is using it yet - we will develop it further when there is real demand.

Core Platform

• Timebanking Engine: Full credit exchange system with wallet, transactions, and broker controls.
• Multi-Tenancy: Host unlimited communities on a single platform, each with their own branding, configuration, and feature set.
• Tenant Hierarchy: Parent–child tenant relationships with feature toggling and federation scoping.
• Smart Matching: AI-powered matching with semantic embeddings, collaborative filtering, availability scheduling, and learned preferences.
• Real-Time Messaging: Private conversations with Pusher WebSocket integration and real-time presence.
• Progressive Web App: Install as a PWA on any device — offline shell, push notifications, NetworkFirst update flow.
• Discover: One curated page that surfaces skills, listings, events, groups, posts and people worth seeing, so members do not have to hunt through every section to find them.
• Maps & Location Providers: Mapping and address lookup are pluggable per community: Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, or Ordnance Survey tiles, paired with Google Places, Nominatim, or UPRN-backed OS Places address validation. Maps stay switched off until a community turns them on, so no mapping key ever reaches the browser by default.
• Native Mobile App Beta: A separate app built with Expo and React Native, talking to the same API as the website. One codebase produces both the Android and the iOS build.
• Accessible Frontend Beta: A second, separate frontend built on GOV.UK Frontend for members who want a plain, HTML-first experience that keeps working without JavaScript. It runs on its own web address and reads the same API as the main app.

Federation

Federation means two different things here, and they are at different stages. Connecting communities that live on one installation is in everyday use. Connecting to other installations and other platforms is built and tested, but switched off by default and not currently in use.

• Community Network (same installation): Link multiple communities hosted on one installation for cross-community discovery, listings, events, and messaging.
• Federation Neighborhoods Beta: Geographically grouped clusters of linked communities for regional coordination.
• Credit Agreements Beta: Negotiated exchange-rate terms between linked communities.
• Federation Analytics: Admin dashboards for cross-community activity, sync health, and federated transaction volume.
• Network & Partner Portal: A dedicated area for whoever runs a network of communities rather than a single one: a partner directory, neighbourhood grouping, credit agreements, network-wide settings, combined activity and analytics, data management, and API keys with their own documentation.
• External Partner Federation Built, not enabled: Connect to other NEXUS installations and to other timebanking platforms over four documented protocols: Nexus native, Komunitin, Credit Commons (CEN-compatible), and TimeOverflow.
• Multi-Protocol Adapters Built, not enabled: Adapters for two-way sync of 9 entity types — members, listings, events, groups, connections, volunteering, reviews, transfers, messages — across all four protocols.

Member Experience

• Service Listings: Post offers and requests, browse and smart-match listings.
• Marketplace Beta: A separate classifieds module for goods and paid services: seller profiles and onboarding, orders and sales, Stripe Connect payouts, a free-and-giveaway section, collections, a map view, pickup slots with QR scanning, shipping options, seller coupons, case handling for disputes, and AI-suggested replies.
• Donations: One-off and recurring donations via Stripe with full dashboards and receipts for organisations.
• Identity Verification Beta: Optional Stripe Identity flow (document + selfie + name/DOB matching) with a verified-member badge.
• Exchange Workflow: Structured service-exchange lifecycle with broker approval and dispute handling.
• Group Exchanges: Bulk community service exchanges across multiple members.
• Social Feed: Posts, comments, likes, polls, hashtags, voice messages, media attachments, link previews, and @mentions.

• Volunteering: Volunteer opportunities, hours tracking, check-ins, expenses, certificates, wellbeing monitoring, emergency alerts, and a volunteer-organisation wallet that pays out time credits on approved hours.
• Job Vacancies: A full recruitment module: vacancies and applications, a drag-and-drop hiring pipeline, talent search, employer profiles and branding, employer onboarding, saved job alerts, per-vacancy analytics, and a public RSS and JSON feed so job aggregators can pick postings up.
• Hiring Bias Audit: Process analytics that surface possible bias in a community’s own hiring: how candidates progress through each stage, rejection rates and average time per stage, how strongly a skills match actually predicts the outcome, and which application sources succeed.
• Merchant Coupons Built, not enabled: Discount coupons issued by marketplace merchants. Kept deliberately separate from spending time credits, and it needs the Marketplace switched on as well.
• Organisations: Company and employer profiles with sub-accounts and a dedicated organisation wallet.
• Sub-Accounts / Family Accounts: Parent–child account relationships for household and family management.
• Reviews & Ratings: Build trust through structured member feedback.
• Endorsements: Peer skill and experience endorsements.
• Polls: Community voting and surveys with multiple question types.
• Skills Browse: Explore the skill taxonomy and discover expertise.
• Availability Scheduling: Timezone-aware time-slot scheduling for smart matching and bookings.
• Courses Preview: Community learning: members run courses with lessons and quizzes, other members enrol and work through them, and instructors can grade work, see how a course is doing, and issue a certificate at the end.
• Podcasts & Community Audio Preview: Community shows, audio stories, interviews and local knowledge recorded by members, with episodes, transcripts, chapters, moderation, and a public RSS feed that works in ordinary podcast apps.
• Clubs & Associations Preview: Membership handling for clubs and associations: dues tracking, bulk member import, and invitations that work across linked clubs.
• Donations & Support Preview: Members can give a one-off donation, or set up a regular one, to support the community that runs their timebank, and manage or stop it themselves at any time. Supporters are recognised for it — this is not a paid tier, and no part of the platform is ever put behind a payment.
• Public Events Beta: Let people without an account browse and read published events. Signing up for one still needs a login.
• Attendance Rewards Beta: Award time credits on verified event check-in, minted against the community rather than taken from the host, so running an event is never a personal cost.
• Partner Venues Beta: Record member visits at local partner venues by scanning the member’s pass QR code. It records the visit only — the platform issues no coupon and applies no discount.
• Collections & Saved Items: Save listings, members and posts, and group them into collections you can share with other members.
• Guardian Consent: Guardian approval for a minor volunteer or event attendee: single-use consent links, encrypted guardian details, and a consent history that can only be added to, never edited.

Content & Communication

• Blog: Tenant-managed content management and community news.
• Resources & Knowledge Base: Structured articles and a shared resource library.
• Help Center: Documentation hub and FAQ.
• Custom Pages: Tenant-managed CMS pages for community content.
• Newsletter System: Email campaign manager with A/B testing, smart segments, geo targeting, recurring sends, templates, send-time optimisation, and full open/click analytics.
• AI Chat Beta: OpenAI-powered assistant for platform guidance.
• Legal Hub: Versioned legal documents with acceptance gates and audit trail.
• Impact Reports: SROI analysis, member outcome reports, and social impact case studies.
• Message Translation: A toggle in any conversation that automatically translates direct messages between two members who do not share a language.
• Social Prescribing Partnership: A managed pathway for health services to refer patients into the timebank as community support. A GP, social prescriber or community health worker makes a formal referral — there is no self-referral hurdle — then a coordinator personally welcomes the person, builds a profile around their strengths, matches them to exchanges, groups and events, and checks in regularly, sending outcome data back to whoever referred them. The page sets out the published results, including a 16:1 social return, and how the model lines up with Sláintecare and the HSE Social Prescribing Framework.

Trust, Reputation & Safety

• Member Verification Badges: Verified status indicators on member profiles.
• NexusScore: Proprietary reputation and trustworthiness scoring.
• Streaks: Consecutive activity tracking to reward consistent engagement.
• Personal Insights Dashboard: Individual engagement metrics, hours given/received, skills breakdown, monthly charts, and personalised recommendations.
• Safeguarding Module: Flagged content review workflow, incident reporting, safeguarding assignment tracking, and a community safety dashboard.
• Broker & Coordinator Application: A separate application for the coordinators and brokers who step in between members when a safeguarding or compliance concern is live. It holds exchange oversight and match approval, member records and onboarding progress, moderation queues for the feed, comments and reviews, risk tags and watch lists, message review for members placed under monitoring, insurance certificate tracking, and reporting.
• Two-Factor Login & Passkeys: An authenticator-app second factor, and passkeys through Windows Hello, Touch ID, Face ID or a hardware security key, so a member can sign in without typing a password at all. Each is switchable per community.
• CRM: Admin contact management with notes, tasks, tags, activity timelines, and export.

AI & Recommendation Engine

• Semantic Search: Meilisearch-powered full-text search across listings, members, events, and groups with typo tolerance, synonyms, and per-tenant isolation.
• Collaborative Filtering: Item-based recommendations from real community interaction data.
• Semantic Embeddings: OpenAI-powered content matching for listings, members, and requests.
• EdgeRank Feed: Time-decay, affinity, and engagement-weighted feed ranking.
• MatchRank & CommunityRank: Bayesian quality scoring with Wilson confidence intervals.
• Group Recommendations: Trending and affinity-based group discovery.
• Match Learning: Feedback loop that improves recommendations from user interactions.
• Algorithm Health Dashboard: Live admin monitoring and tuning of all ranking systems.
• Choice of AI Provider: The AI layer is not tied to one vendor: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and self-hosted Ollama are all supported behind the same interface, so a community can pick on cost, data location, or policy grounds.
• AI Agents Built, not enabled: Per-community AI agents that run jobs on a schedule, put proposed actions in front of an administrator for approval, and help with day-to-day platform operations. Every run and every proposal is recorded.

Caring Community Layer

An integrated mutual-aid layer that brings everyday care, volunteering, organisations and impact together. It stays switched off until a community opts in, and the admin panel labels it Alpha, so everything here carries a Preview chip.

• Request Help & Offer Favours Preview: Tell your neighbours what you need without writing a formal listing, or record an informal act of kindness you have already done. A favour needs no time credits — it simply gets recognised.
• Care Relationships Preview: Link yourself to someone you are informally caring for, see everyone in your care in one place, arrange temporary cover when you need respite or are away, and pause or end a relationship without losing its history.
• Gifting, Transfers & Future Care Preview: Gift banked hours to family, friends or anyone who needs them; take your banked hours with you if you move to another community running NEXUS; or leave them in a future care fund to draw on for grocery runs, appointments, or simply company, later on.
• Trust Tiers Preview: A member’s standing in the community, with a plain breakdown of how they earned their current tier and what the next one asks for.
• Warmth Pass Preview: A portable trust credential a member earns on reaching Trusted tier, showing their logged hours, peer reviews, identity verification and the areas they help with. Members show it to care recipients, coordinators and organisations as proof that they are a trusted helper.
• Care Provider Directory Preview: Find local care services, day centres, associations and volunteers in your region alongside member-to-member help.
• Concern Reporting Preview: Members can raise a safeguarding concern themselves, and staff review, assign and resolve it against an action log that can only be added to, never rewritten.
• Surveys & Community Projects Preview: Collect structured feedback from residents, municipal partners and programme teams, and coordinate community projects with the people taking part.
• Community Market Preview: One place to discover time-credit services and local goods offered inside the community.
• Spending Time Credits Locally Preview: Members see the hours they have earned and spend them at taking-part local businesses, with a history of every redemption.
• Municipality Reporting Preview: A shared municipal calendar, a resident feedback inbox that routes questions, ideas, issues and complaints to the right team, and reporting built for council and public-sector partners.

• Email Webhook Processing: Postmark bounce, complaint, open, and delivery event handling.
• Automated Test Suite: Around 16,500 PHP test methods across 1,600 test files, plus roughly 1,300 frontend test suites, covering money flow, webhooks, federation, groups and the marketplace. Every push runs them, and a deploy is blocked until the pushed commit has been checked.
• Performance Monitoring: Every request is counted, and slow, memory-hungry or query-heavy requests are recorded in detail for an admin dashboard. Only the shape of a query is stored, never member data, and old records are pruned nightly.

• Partner API & Developer Portal Built, not enabled: A documented API that lets an external partner integrate with a community, with token authentication, an endpoint reference and webhooks, plus a self-serve developer portal for whoever is building the integration.
• Local Advertising Built, not enabled: Community-run advertising and push campaigns with their own budgeting and admin tooling, so a community can promote local activity itself.
• Regional Analytics Built, not enabled: Monthly regional activity reports prepared for municipalities and regional bodies, managed centrally rather than by each community.
• Swiss FADP Mode Built, not enabled: An additional consent banner and data-handling mode for communities operating under the revised Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection.
• Fully Dockerized: Production and development run from the same Docker Compose foundations.

Open Source - AGPL-3.0

Project NEXUS is fully open source under AGPL-3.0. Every line of code is auditable, forkable, and self-hostable. Federation protocols are documented as open standards so no single platform controls the global timebanking network.
